Love has died today. It is Valentine’s Day, the most overrated day in the calendar, it has become so commercialized that marketers forgot that they are hurting people. And when I say people, I mean those who are like me, single, unattached, and without a better half for the past 33 years. I mean, let’s face it, there is a lovers’ day in the calendar and no celebration devoted for singletons? Isn’t that a tad unfair? Attention marketers, we have disposable income, we are single, we buy ourselves stuff that nobody will intend to buy for us as gifts, and that’s what we call single empowerment. When I was growing up, I had lots of pets, dogs, fish, birds, and when I decided to live on my own, I waited for someone to buy me new pets, and sad to say, EDSA 2 happened after the long lull of EDSA 1, so many Christmases passed me by, many Valentine’s, and still, no new pets in sight. Guess what I did, I bought my own pets, and with pet ownership comes the expenses, the dog food, the healthcare, the grooming, and that’s no little expense, those are major expenses. My gist is that maybe single people are more prone to depression that is why they tend to spend more than attached couples. I just have to buy dinner for one, movie for one, and I am telling you, those are expensive dinners and movie dates. And what do you expect from couples? They are such cheapskate that they will just eat dinner for two in Jollibee, spending P200 for some Value Meals. Isn’t that insane? We, single people, have the cash to burn and those marketers are not talking to us? Shame on you, we also love ourselves to a hilt, that’s why we don’t want to be part of a couple. Why would we spend our hard-earned money on others when we are so in love with ourselves, we will pamper first ourselves, we will shop for ourselves, feed ourselves, take vacation for ourselves, so that when the day that we decide to be in love with someone, we will have the classic line to say, “Sorry Honey, but you missed the day that I was dreaming about us together, so I decided to do it alone, so now, don’t expect me to join you in those dinners or movies, I am so done with that, been there…”, isn’t that the bomb? Well, I can go and rant about single blessedness, and couples will just point out that I am just envious. Excuse me, why would I be envious? Envious of waiting up all night for someone to call, of someone to show up for dinner, to clean up after a partner, to cook dinner and goes unappreciated? Hahaha! Single people don’t have to go that low, we rather be alone than to be somebody else’s maid. At least, we single people have more spaces in the closet for our clothes, more picture frames to fill up with our lovely photos, more shelves to put our toiletries, more rack for our shoes, eat your heart out couples!
